Don't be too hard on her just yet. I think the point is something like that he should not try to return the favor because that would spite her good intentions. This is something that normally would occur between two friends who were really so close that any favors between the two of them should not be spoken of or calculated...or that would mean that the relationship is so shallow that it needs to calculate benefits. Often times when two characters become blood brothers, if the mc suddenly gets rich and tries to pay back his friend, then his friend would actually get angry. There might be some of that going on here, because we actually don't know why she was helping him so much for the last several years.

Doesn't exactly help that the MC decided to make a public spectacle out of it as well. A normal person would have seen how many people were around and just left it until they can catch them alone...
